Jerrold Seigel

Jerrold Seigel, PhD

Jerrold Seigel is William R. Kenan Professor of History emeritus at NYU, where he has taught since 1988, and served as chair of the History Department from 1996-1999. Before arriving at NYU he taught for twenty-five years at Princeton. His research concerns the themes of social and cultural theory, the history of selfhood and subjectivity and relations between art and society.

He is the author of Marx’s Fate: The Shape of a Life (Princeton University Press, 1978); Bohemian Paris: Culture, Politics, and the Boundaries of Bourgeois Life, 1830-1930 (Viking, 1986); The Private Worlds of Marcel Duchamp: Desire, Liberation, and the Self in Modern Culture (University of California Press, 1995) and, most recently, of The Idea of the Self: Thought and Experience in Western Europe since the Seventeenth Century (Cambridge University Press, 2005).
