Darrin M. McMahon, PhD

Darrin M. McMahon is a historian, author, and Professor of History at Dartmouth College. He was formerly the Ben Weider Professor and Distinguished Research Professor at Florida State University. McMahon was educated at the University of California, Berkeley and Yale, where he received his PhD. Before his current professorship, McMahon held post-doctoral fellowships at the Society of Fellows in the Humanities at Columbia University, the Remarque Institute at New York University, and the Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen in Vienna. He also taught history at Yale and the University of Rouen, France.

McMahon is the author of Enemies of the Enlightenment: The French Counter-Enlightenment and the Making of Modernity as well as Happiness: A History, which has been translated into twelve languages, and was awarded Best Books of the Year honors for 2006 by The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Library Journal, and Slate Magazine. In 2013, McMahon completed a history of the idea of genius and the genius figure, Divine Fury: A History of Genius. He is also the editor of The Enlightenment: Critical Concepts in Historical Studies, 5 vols., with Ryan Hanley; Rethinking Modern European Intellectual History, with Samuel Moyn; and the forthcoming Genealogies of Genius, with Joyce Chaplin.
