S. James Gates Jr., PhD

S. James Gates Jr. is the Ford Foundation Professor of Physics at Brown University. He was previously at the University of Maryland for several decades, where he was named a Distinguished University Professor, University System of Maryland Regents Professor, and John S. Toll Professor of Physics. Professor Gates is known for his work on supersymmetry, supergravity, and superstring theory.

Professor Gates received the National Medal of Science for his contribution to science and research in 2015, and has served on the U.S. President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. In 2018, Gates was elected to the presidential line of the American Physical Society: He will begin to serve as its Vice President in 2019, and President in 2021. He is the co-author of Superspace: One Thousand and One Lessons in Supersymmetry, and has authored more than 200 research papers. He has been featured in dozens of documentaries.
